Upcountry
The lush slopes leading up to Haleakala is called Upcountry Maui. The main community of Makawao is an eclectic mix of historic and contemporary influences.
Makawao is a Paniolo (cowboy) town where they have a great July 4th rodeo. There are many art galleries and shops to explore while in town.
Makawao is shedding its wild west image to reflect Maui’s newest wave of inhabitants, artists/musicians, spiritual healers, alternative health professionals and new agers.
Also part of Upcountry are the towns of Kula, Pukalani, Haiku, Keokea, and Ulupalakua.
