Ask Endora

Dear Endora,

I want to go camping in Hawaii and wanted to know your favorite camping spot!

Just Curious

Dear Just Curious,

Amazing as this might seem I actually have camped in Hawaii! I have camped out under the stars and also rented a motorhome, which I do not think they rent anymore. The island is Maui and the campground is at Wai’anapanapa State Park. To me there is no better place to explore than the fabulous Hana area.

You will find the essence of “old Hawaii” here as this town is based on its community. There are hidden trails, fresh water pools and beaches to explore as well as fabulous hikes.

There are tent cabins you can stay at that have electricity or you can camp on your own.

Not only is there a black sand beach you can swim at, the coastline is perfect for hiking where you will find old Hawaiian dwellings dating back more than 100 years as well as petryglyphs.

I hope you are adventurous and get to explore one of my favorite destinations in all of Hawaii!

Take care,
   Endora

Dear Endora,

My friend told me that you have to have a license by the state of Hawaii to be a beach boy. Silly - is she just pulling my leg?

Andrea - Idaho

Dear Andrea,

Well darling your friend is not pulling your leg. In Hawaii, and actually in Waikiki, the ”beach boys” got their start in the 1930’s.

They were a short of beach patrol who were ambassadors of Waikiki - they served the needs of celebrities, royalty, and the general public alike. They talked story and were well regarded. In fact, the author James Michener said of them, ”Without these remarkable people the island would be nothing. With them, it is a carnival. They are generous, courageous, and comic...they are perpetual adolescents of the ocean, the playboys of the Pacific...”

The Waikiki Beach Boys are a group of individuals who are licensed by the state to teach surfing, canoe riding and must be regularly qualified in life saving techniques.

All the best,
   Endora

Dear Endora,

I really would like to visit Tahiti but am not sure which islands to visit - I want something different, so not Bora Bora. Which islands do you think are worthy of my time?

Geoff – Connecticut

Dear Geoff,

ALL of French Polynesia is breathtakingly gorgeous, but if I were planning a trip to this exotic destination it would include islands in the Society and Tuamotu groupings. The Society Islands are quite mountainous and filled with waterfalls and many rivers; however, the Tuamotus have gorgeous lagoons with intense watercolors and amazing water clarity. The specific island in these groupings will depend on what you want to do, what type of experience you desire and ultimately your budget. Contact a Tiare (Tahiti) specialist to help orchestrate your dream vacation to French Polynesia. Either Patricia or Joyce at Incredible Journey will be able to guide you.

Best of luck
