Jamaica - When You Go, You Know
As the Caribbean Specialist for Incredible Journey, I have taken numerous cruises and familiarization trips to all parts of the Caribbean. Jamaica is a favorite location of mine, both for the natural beauty of the environment and the friendliness of the people. Jamaica's high season is December 15 - April 15.
The people make Jamaica what it is, a citizenry passionate about showing off their island and laid-back lifestyle. Jamaica is an island that offers one of the world's greatest beaches, mist-swept mountain passes, palm-lined rivers and small villages bursting with tropical flora. Add to that the wonderful reggae music and jerk-spiced cuisine that is available and you've got a Caribbean adventure that can produce extraordinary memories. Wonderful boutique, moderate and luxury accommodations are available throughout Jamaica.
There are several major cities to choose from for a wonderful Caribbean vacation, each offering something completely different to travelers of all ages.
Kingston is the capital city and cultural well of Jamaica. The National Gallery of Art showcases native sculptures and paintings, Bob Marley's home is a museum and a trip to Kingston is not complete without stopping at Devon House, a mansion built in 1881.
Montego Bay is centrally located and is three miles away from the Donald Sangster International Airport. Here you will find the famous Hip Strip (where the original Margaritaville is located), many beachfront hotels, and historic plantations like Rose Hall and the Greenwood Great House. Jamaica is fast becoming an affordable golf Mecca. Over the last few years, millions of dollars have been invested in golf courses surrounding Montego Bay. The drama of the courses defies description, with some holes perched on mountain summits while others sidle up against the Caribbean Sea. If golf is a passion, then a stay at Round Hill or Tryall golf and spa resorts is highly recommended.
Negril is known as the capital of casual and is a place where you can experience seven miles of spectacular white sand and cobalt blue Caribbean seas. Negril is 55 miles southwest of Montego Bay; 60-90 minutes over land. Negril is the epitome of a water sports playground where you can experience adventures such as catamaran excursions, jet skiing, wind surfing, water skiing, snorkeling and, for the truly adventurous, cliff diving. Excellent bike riding trails line the cliffs and woodlands, another draw for adventure travelers.
Ocho Rios stands out as Jamaica's most varied destination and is perfect for food, music and art buffs. Evita's Restaurant is not to be missed and is highly regarded for jerk lasagna, fresh seafood and pasta. The new ReggaeXplosion is for reggae fans and offers state-of-the-art multimedia exhibits. Harmony Hall, a historic plantation home filled with locally produced paintings, will satisfy travelers interested in local arts. If you are interested in swimming with dolphins, then a visit to Ocho Rios should be on your list of destinations to visit. A stay at the Jamaica Inn or Royal Plantation is highly recommended for your Ocho Rios vacation.
