Puno was the birthplace of one of the most important pre-Inca cultures, the Tiahuanaco, the most advanced civilization of the ancient Aymara people, who left monumental ruins which continue to arouse wonder and admiration even today. Legend tells that the first Inca, Manco Cápac, and his wife Mama Ocllo, emerged from Lake Titicaca, and were entrusted by their father, the Sun God, to found the Inca Empire or Tawantinsuyo which was divided into four regions. One of such regions was Collasuyo, today Puno, which stretched across the Collao plateau. When the Spaniards arrived in Cusco in the mid-16th century, they found tremendous mineral wealth, especially gold and silver. In the 1660s, a bloody internal struggles arose over the possession of the important Laikakota mine, one league from modern Puno, which forced the Viceroy, the Count of Lemos, to travel to the area to bring peace. His visit led to the creation, on November 4th, 1668, of what is today the city of Puno. There, Spanish priests eager to convert the indigenous population built beautiful churches which blended Christian styles with the imagination and skill of the local people into a new mestizo style.

Optional Excursion: Nazca Lines

nazca lines Square in Lima

Day 01 – Lima - Departure transfer to the bus station for a regular tourist bus transfer to Ica City. Arrival and accommodation at Las Dunas Hotel (Standard Room – Breakfast Included) for a one night stay. Transfer to the aerodrome to fly over the mysterious Nazca Lines. The pilot of the aircraft will give us a brief explanation about the different lines. Return to Ica. Afternoon at leisure.

Located on the Jumana plains, in the coastal department of Ica, the impressive Nazca Lines decorate the southern desert. While the lines can be seen from viewpoints atop the 12 meter-high towers constructed for that purpose, there is little doubt that the view is better from the air. The tour begins at the airfield in the town of Nasca, where you take one of the small aircraft that permit viewing the enigmatic figures set in the desert plains on a flight of about half an hour above the lines that the people of Nazca drew on the land over a thousand years ago.

Day 02 – Departure transfer by regular tourist bus back to Lima

Add an additional $500 p/person

The Nazca Lines are located in the Nazca Desert, a high arid plateau that stretches between the towns of Nazca and Palpa on the pampa (a large flat area of southern Peru). The desolate plain of the Peruvian coast which comprises the Pampas of San Jose (Jumana), Socos, El Ingenio and others in the province of Nasca, is 400 Km. South of Lima, covers an area of approximately 450 km2, of sandy desert as well as the slopes of the contours of the Andes. They cover nearly 400 square miles of desert. Etched in the surface of the desert pampa sand about 300 hundred figures made of straight lines, geometric shapes most clearly visible from the air.

There are many theories regarding the purpose these lines. Were they built for the gods to see? Or for shamans who “flew” over them in drug induced dreams? Or did their creators already have means to actually leave the ground, such as balloons? In any case, from the ground there hardly is anything to see: the area is mostly flat and the figures are a size that makes it impossible to see them whole from this perspective. From an airplane, however, they are clearly distinguishable. There is a monkey, a spider, a colibri, even a human figure (often called the “astronaut”). Of course, over time, erosion must have taken a toll on the lines which are believed to be more than 2000 years old.

Posada Refugio Amazonas

lodge entrance Posada Amazonas Common Room Puerto Maldonado refugio_amazonas

Refugio Amazonas is a simple, 24 room lodge located in a 120 hectare private reserve surrounded by the community of Condenado, ~ three hours by boat from the nearest town Puerto Maldonado. Thanks to its location in the Tambopata National Reserve buffer zone, Refugio Amazonas is the ideal stepping stone for explorations to the Tambopata Research Center. Refugio Amazonas will play an important role coalescing the communities around it to support the conservation of the buffer adjacent to the Tambopata National Reserve.

tambopatariver

Refugio Amazonas has been built using a combination of traditional native materials (wood, palm fronds, wild cane and clay) and architecture and modern day eco-lodge technology. The lodge itself consists of a complex divided into sections: rooms, dining area and kitchen, relaxation area and internal support facilities. The entire roof of the lodge is constructed using high quality crisneja palm fronds, whereas the floors are of tropical mahogany.

The room's complex is built of four 9 X 24 meter structures. The rooms are 7 x 4 meters so they can comfortably hold three beds, although they are set up for two. The walls dividing each room are built using cane and clay, and extend from the floor to about 2.5 meters height making each room private. The combination of clay and cane achieves two important objectives: regulating heat and providing a charming final appearance. Sounds can be heard from room to room. The side that looks out to the forest does not have a wall or screening of any kind, acting as a large window facing the forest.

The reason we have been able to incorporate this design into our lodge is because mosquitoes are not really a problem around the lodge clearing and the open section allows for an intimate contact with the rain forest. A second small window on the opposite side, set up very high, keeps the rooms well ventilated. Beds are 1.05m X 2.05m with mosquito nets. Each room has a private bathroom with cold water only. Rooms and bathrooms are separated by drapes. The dining room/ lounge are spacious and offer ample area for resting and socializing.
