Ask Endora

Dear Endora,

I am used to visiting the Caribbean and the water there is quite warm. I am traveling to Hawaii this September and was wondering what to expect?

Greg — New Jersey

Dear Greg,

The Pacific Ocean will be a bit cooler than the Caribbean, which on average is about 82 degrees. You can expect the waters in Hawaii to be about 78 degrees and this is the year round temperature. I have been to French Polynesia and the water here can be upwards of 88+ degrees! When you are visiting a warm destination, it actually is rather nice to be cooled off when going for a swim.

Enjoy your stay,

Dear Endora,

I am traveling to Europe soon and would like to get your opinion on bringing a cell phone, calling cards etc., I want to stay connected.

Bradley — Oklahoma

Dear Bradley,

There really are lots of different options out there but what I found to be the least expensive way to “stay connected” is by getting a European cell phone that allows you to change your SIM card. Darling this is a pay as you go phone, no plan required. You can purchase the SIM cards and phones from a company called Call in Europe, here is their link: http://www.callineurope.com/cgi-bin/cie.cgi?b=incrdbljy&p=index.html

Depending on where you are traveling to all calls you receive should be FREE, and you can then get a calling card at Nobelcom.com which your family and you can use. This is what I use all the time, it is fantastic!

Stay connected!

Dear Endora,

When I rent a car do I need to buy their insurance? Often times the cost of the insurance, extra driver, navigation system etc. will cost more than the vehicle!

Perplexed

Dear Perplexed,

It is wise to check with your credit card company and Insurance company to see if you will be covered and to what extent. I personally use my credit card and carry car insurance so I am covered and never even think about purchasing insurance. This is for travel in the United States, international travel requires a minimum amount of insurance to be purchased which is included in all rentals made by non nationals. You can always purchase more insurance when traveling internationally but again I would contact my credit card company and car insurance provider.

Hope this helps!
