Welcome to Kauai
Did you know that Kauai was the only island in all of Hawaii that King
Kamehameha did not conquer? It was given to him, by King Kaumualii. Maybe
that is why there is such a warm spirit of “Aloha” that greats you every
day on the island of Kauai – the Hawaiian island that everyone dreams
of. Aloha and welcome to the most exotic of all the islands. Kauai
is by far my favorite island. The lush tropical north
shore is where you will find cloud covered mountains,
laced with waterfalls that fade seamlessly into the
near perfect white sand beaches that stretch for
miles. The beauty of the north shore is a vision that
will be etched in your mind for eternity. The sunny
south shore boasts a warm arid climate that seldom
experiences rain.
Kauai is the oldest of the islands, millions of years older than its
sister islands. Legend has it that this was the original home of Pele,
the goddess of fire and volcanoes before she moved southward. Local lore
will tell you that Kauai is also the homeland of Menehunes, South Sea
leprechauns who stood about two feet tall, worked only in darkness and
accomplished formidable engineering feats between dusk and dawn.
This is a small, friendly island, not crowded and very easy to navigate.
There are many natural wonders here and one of the most awesome
is the Waimea Canyon, a 3,657 foot gorge called the “Grand Canyon of the
Pacific” by Mark Twain. Not to be missed is the spectacular rugged,
beautiful and isolated Na Pali Coast on the northshore which is
accessible only by boat or foot. In Poipu you will find the world famous
Spouting Horn, a saltwater geyser where water spouts up through the lava
rocks to heights of 50 feet. Best seen by helicopter is Mount Waialeale
which is documented as the wettest place on earth, a true tropical
rainforest.
There is much to do here if you can pull yourself away from the great
swimming and snorkeling on the sparkling island beaches. Plan to spend
an afternoon touring the National Tropical Botanical Gardens, both in
Lawai and in Haena. History fans will enjoy the many island museums and
historic homes. Movie buffs will be interested to know that some Kauai
locations may look familiar if they have seen Jurassic Park, Raiders of
the Lost Ark, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, Blue Hawaii,
Thunderball, The Thorn Birds or South Pacific, just to name a few.
So come here to walk along beaches where the ocean marries the coastline
in a heavenly match, watch with childlike awe as dolphins and whales
swim in their natural habitat, and observe from a premier vantage point
in your helicopter the panoramic beauty of Kauai's remarkable vistas.
