Ask Endora

Dear Endora,

I have heard the waves can get big in Hawaii, but how big is big and what was the BIGGEST wave ever recorded?

Brian - Washington

Dear Brian,

With breaks called "JAWS," "KINGS," and "FUTURES" to name a few - the waves in Hawaii get super big and when the surf is up the crowds hit the beaches to glimpse the exteme althetes surf these monsters. In Hawaii waves are measured from their back side, in California waves are measured from their face - so a 6 foot California wave is equivalent to a 3 foot wave in Hawaii. The biggest surfable wave was about a 25 foot wave, and the largest wave on record was from a Tsunami (tidal wave) that hit Hawaii in the 1970's at 160 feet!

Whatever you do, when you visit Hawaii during the "big surf" make sure you get out there and view the intensity these waves have, and take pictures!!!

Endora.

Dear Endora,

My mother said years ago she used to listen to a show called "Hawaii Calls," and this is how people used to have entertainment. Have you heard about this?

Sara - Texas

Dear Sara,

It was Webley Edwards whose voice was heard upon opening each "Hawaii Calls" broadcast. This show started in 1935 and was broadcast to 750 radio channels, worldwide, each week at its heyday in 1952. It was actually broadcast live at the Moana Surfrider - which was the first hotel in Hawaii, it opened in March 1901. You can actually find "Hawaii Calls" cd's if you want to listen to what others long ago pined for week after week!

Regards,

Dear Endora,

We are considering going to the Maya Riviera for a family vacation, and we all love to snorkel. Where are the best places to snorkel?

Dan – Kentucky

Dear Dan,

The Maya Riviera is an underwater playground for those who appreciate sea life. Besides the many snorkel spots in the ocean the Maya Riviera has cenotes that offer a unique snorkeling opportunity. Please make sure to ask our Mexico specialist about where to stay and places to visit when planning your eco-adventure to the Maya Riviera as not all of the Maya Riviera will be suitable for snorkeling. Here is a map of just some of the many snorkeling possibilities:
