Welcome to the Big Island

The Big Island of Hawaii is truly one of the most amazing places on earth and if you haven't been there make 2010 your year to go!

You will find tremendous diversity, for this is the land of fire and ice, jungle and desert. Ski the slopes of Mauna Kea one day then hike along a jungle path and discover a huge waterfall the next.

The Big Island has black sand beaches with resident turtles and pods of whales that can be seen year round. You can snorkel, surf and scuba or try flumin da ditch, a ride that will have you sailing down an irrigation ditch in a kayak. Or maybe you just want to tour one of the Kona coffee plantations, browse through art galleries, or visit a world class spa in a fabulous resort.

The number one attraction is, of course, Kilauea which brings visitors from all over the world to experience the mesmerizing steamy, red hot lava as it gurgles and bubbles its way to the ocean. After entering Volcanoes National Park you can drive the 12 miles down Chain of Craters Road, park and hike across black lava fields to see and experience one of the true wonders of the world. The National Park Service operates the Kilauea Visitor Center and has a hotline number for eruption updates.

Not far from the volcano is Hilo, a sleepy coastal town and a good jumping off point to explore the Hamakua coast, a very lush, tropical area with funky little towns and huge waterfalls not to mention the world renowned Tropical Botanical Gardens.

On the Kona side of the island you will find the coffee plantations and the big resorts with beautiful beaches and miles and miles of dramatic black lava rock fields on both sides of the road. Explore one of Kona town's quaint shops or enticing restaurants or just stroll along the water’s edge and drink in the breath taking beauty.

Continue north along the famous Kohala Coast where you will find Hapuna Beach. With its spectacular warm white sands and gentle bay ideal for swimming, it is one of the most beautiful and popular beaches in all of the islands.

If you head inland you will come to Waimea and the well known Parker Ranch where you can ride horses and see how the real Hawaiian cowboys lived. A little further on and you can visit Mauna Kea, one of the best places for stargazing in the world with 13 telescopes and no light pollution.

The island is so big that it has two airports which allows you to fly into one, pick up your rental car, really explore the different areas of the island then drop your car off at the other airport for your flight out.

Give us a call and we can put together a unique trip to the Big Island personally designed for your special interests. We can arrange airfare, car rental, and accommodations so you can come and experience the aloha for yourself.
