Ask Endora

Dear Endora,

I am contemplating a river cruise, but I am not sure I would like this type of travel. Is there a target market identified by these lines as to who would be a good river cruise candidate?

I don’t want to waste time on a trip if I don’t think it will suit my tastes or needs, got to hit as much as I can on the bucket list!

Thank you, Greg

Dear Greg,

I can personally state that I LOVE river cruising – but you are correct in that it might not be for everyone. The river cruise lines actually have compiled a list based on past passengers to determine the profile of a perfect river cruise candidate.

  • Typically 50 years of age on up...
  • 80% have traveled on a mega cruise line at least once
  • Well traveled
  • Couples comprise of 80% of clientele
  • 60% of travelers are women
  • Well educated
  • Those who want to include land travel as part of the experience
  • Active travelers
  • Unstructured experience – you can participate in land excursions or do your own thing
  • Unique destinations
  • Upscale travelers where experience is a key reason to travel

After you travel on the smaller cruise lines you will understand why so many people choose this type of cruise over the mega cruise ships. It is an amazing experience that you will never forget!

Endora

Dear Endora,

I want to go camping in Hawaii and wanted to know your favorite camping spot!

Just curious

Dear Just Curious,

Amazing as this might seem I actually have camped in Hawaii! I have camped out under the stars and also rented a motorhome, which I do not think they rent anymore. The island is Maui and the campground is at Wai’anapanapa State Park. To me there is no better place to explore than the fabulous Hana area.

You will find the essence of “old Hawaii” here as this town is based on its community. There are hidden trails, fresh water pools and beaches to explore as well as fabulous hikes.

There are tent cabins you can stay at that have electricity or you can camp on your own.

Not only is there a black sand beach you can swim at, the coastline is perfect for hiking where you will find old Hawaiian dwellings dating back more than 100 years as well as petryglyphs.

I hope you are adventurous and get to explore one of my favorite destinations in all of Hawaii!

Take care,
   Endora

Dear Endora,

I have been to Hawaii many times, and I love the fresh seafood offered on each island. But I am always afraid to go out of my comfort zone – I typically order Ono or Mahi Mahi. This time I want to try something new, any suggestions?

Bonnie

Dear Bonnie,

Oh, darling the fish you must try is Moi...

On a visit to Mama’s Fish House on Maui, my sister ordered the Moi – a fish reserved for royalty back in the day, IS one of the tastiest fish I have ever enjoyed in Hawaii.

It is not a fish that you find on many menus, and it is mostly raised in aquafarms rather than caught in the wild – but if it is on the menu order it, guaranteed you will not be sorry!

Enjoy
   Bon voyage! Endora
