Ask Endora

Dear Endora,

The hubby & I just aren't tour people. We have tried different tours and have come to the conclusion that we will never attempt another planned out, fast paced, guided, in your face (and space) tour again! You know, we're the kind that like to keep things on the down low, march to the beat of our own drum, and yet, take a step or two off the beaten path to find those "hidden gems" along the way. Do you have any great destination ideas for the "socially challenged"?

By the way Endora, that picture of you looks a bit like someone quite dear to the hubby & I that we once knew ... could it be? :o)

Thank you for your fabulous opinion ... JB (anonymity, you understand)

Dear JB,

Ah, travelers dear to my heart as I too am not the tour type. I would say just about anywhere you want to go in the world (that is safe) can be experienced independently or as we in the travel profession call an FIT trip. The main difficulty with these trips is typically the language barrier. When this occurs I always ask the concierge at my hotel for a translator and guide, the price is typically nominal and the bonus is a private guide!

Lately I have been traveling throughout the United States - I feel we often times don't take advantage of our wonderful country and am having fun rediscovering America!

I have been told I look like so many different people - I must have one of those faces!

All the best,
   Endora

Dear Endora,

I have heard the waves in Hawaii are measured differently than in the continental United States is this true? And what was the biggest wave ever measured?

Stephen

Dear Stephen,

The waves in Hawaii are measured from the back side. A 6 foot wave in California is equivalent to a 3 foot wave in Hawaii. The largest surfed wave was on Oahu and measured 55 feet by California standards. That is some big wave!

Endora

Dear Endora,

We are considering a family vacation to Mexico but don't want to have our young children exposed to clothing optional beaches, are there many of these beaches in Mexico?

Concerned mother

Dear Concerned mother,

Actually topless and nude beaches are illegal in Mexico, although you will find from time to time those areas where topless bathing is allowed. The main tourist resorts that cater to families will not allow this type of bathing - so stick to areas that cater to families and your children won't be exposed to nudity.

Best regards,
   Endora
