Dear Joyce,

Now that summer is but a memory and we are back to our daily routines, I hope that most of us can look back at this past summer with fond memories of having spent time with the people that mean the most to us in life. Creating memories doesn't mean you have to spring for an expensive vacation to make everyone happy, it could be as simple as spending a day at the beach, lake, river, going to have tea in the city, or bike riding on a trail - basically anything that gets us away from our so called everyday lives.

Kids are pretty easy to please and when asked, as adults, what their favorite childhood memory is I think we are all a bit surprised at how simple the answer can be. This summer I took my kids to southern California for our annual Disneyland trip but this time spent a couple of nights at Huntington Beach. We spent time hanging out at the beach - we actually went in the water (it wasn't cold at all) and my kids were introduced to a favorite pastime of all kids who grow up at the beach - sand crabbing. As a kid who grew up at Venice Beach, California, we used to go sand crab digging all the time. It was fun to hurry and dig them up out of the sand as the water retreated from the shore, and then once caught for them to wiggle in our little hands. My kids, who are not little anymore, had just as much fun as any kid and for a mom they were just as enjoyable to watch.

After the sun had gone down we lit a bonfire, ate s'mores and just hung out - it was a perfect ending to a sun drenched beach day. Life doesn't get any better than that, plain and simple...

So, next time you want to create memories - think back about what made you happy as a kid and I bet you will realize it is the simpler things in life. I encourage you to make time for the people who mean the most to you and create special memories together!

It's a well known fact in the travel industry that a cruise vacation gives you the best value for your dollar and yet, only 12% of Americans have cruised before. If you've ever wanted to cruise but haven't yet made a reservation it may be because there are so many cruise lines to choose from and you don't know which cruise would be the best one for you. Cruise lines definitely have their own personalities and it's important to pick the right one in order to ensure a fabulous cruise experience. Below are a few tips to help you select the right cruise line (below the more well known cruise lines are mentioned but there are plenty of "unique" cruise lines not mentioned below - these ships are typically for the well traveled cruiser).

  • Dear Endora

Dear Endora, I recently called to secure a verandah cabin on a cruise next fall, more than a year in advance of the sailing date. Although I was able to reserve a cabin in the category of my choice, it was offered on a guarantee basis; thus I was unable to be assigned a specific cabin at the time I made the reservation. Why couldn't I get a cabin assigned at the time I made the reservation? Surely the ship is not booked this far in advance. I'm uncomfortable with this situation and am considering canceling my reservation.

    Grand Marnier Chocolate Volcano Cake

We have all heard about the fabulous food presented on the cruise lines. Well I would like to share with you a scrumptious dessert recipe that we were lucky to enjoy at one of the last cruise seminar's I attended.

    Kauai Nightlife

Kauai, the Garden Isle, has much to offer the visitor-vacationer-explorer. Here you will find the most beautiful beaches in the state; the magnificent Na Pali coast with its rugged cliffs and secluded sea caves, incredible rainforests, and the vistas and panoramas of Waimea Canyon. You might also experience a most breathtaking helicopter ride and tour of the extinct volcano Waialeale, resplendent with its cascading waterfalls.

Splendid, private, oceanfront retreat on a beautifully landscaped, four acre site. Here, you're surrounded by lush, tropical vegetation with breathtaking ocean and mountain views. Even gentle streams flow across the property, hence the home is named Waipuna - the Hawaiian word for spring water.

    In search of your roots

We all come from somewhere. Whether our parents bravely crossed borders for a better life before we were born, or generations ago our families were deeply entrenched in the southern hemisphere, our bloodlines race with the trade winds across the oceans to connect to another land and another time.
