The Big Island is the largest island in the Pacific (about the same size as Connecticut). It is a very diverse land and the home of the world’s most active volcano, Kilauea, which has been erupting since 1983.
You'll also discover Mauna Kea (white mountain) where expert skiers can ski during the winter, tropical rainforests and dry barren lava deserts, and pristine green, black, and golden sandy beaches.
The Big Island is the place for adventure seekers. Here you can witness the lava flowing from Kilauea forming the newest land on earth or try your hand at deep-sea fishing. If you’re lucky you might reel in a trophy marlin. Because much of the land surrounding the island is lava rock instead of sand the snorkeling is magnificent.
The island of Hawaii is steeped in Hawaiian tradition: there is much to explore. Hilo one of the rainiest cities in the United States is home to the Merrie Monarch Festival (awesome Hula event) that takes place every March or April. There are acres of petroglyphs etched in the black lava, numerous heiaus (ancient temples), and burial caves scattered in the hills. If you want to experience the real Hawaii, this is the place to be.
